IN BOTANY, the name Aloe applies to about 360 different
species of plants, all of them belonging to the same family world wide.
It is a subspecies of the Liliacee family. Aloe has a structure that makes
it suitable for living in dry and hot climates. Its leaves contain a kind
of particular tissue, a sort of plant mucilage, that can retain big quantities
of water. In north-east of Australia this plant has found its ideal habitat
and has rapidly spread. IN MEDICINE, several specialists ascribe healing properties to some varieties of Aloe. Among these, Aloe Barbadensia Miller is the most appreciated in scientific circles. It is difficult to ascertain when Aloe started to be used therapeutically. The earliest reference is on 1700 BC Sumarian clay tablets. Aloe has been important in China for several centuries and is still a household remedy today. The Greeks and Romans used it to treat wounds and abrasions, to cure mouth infections and soothe itching. Several diseases are effectively treated with Aloe today: gout, dermatitis, abrasions, cuts, peptic and duodenal ulcers, burns, exanthema, immunodeficiency diseases and herpes zoster inflammations. |

The GEL is the internal parenchyma tissue of Aloe leaves. This gelatinous substance has an original characteristic: an anti-inflammatory effect that soothes and calms tissues, bringing about reductions in pain and damage. Steroids are known to produce this effect. Plant steroids of Aloe Vera are topic anti-inflammatory agents acting in the same way as steroid drugs. WOUND HEALING is one of the specific effects of Aloe. The process of healing has much in common with the process of immune stimulation, since they are both positive and not inhibitory processes. |

Scientific research asserts that mannose, a substance contained in Aloe, increases the macrophage activity and helps healing. THE IMMUNE SYSTEM therefore receives a helping hand from Aloe Vera, which can activate immune cells and macrophages and neutrophils in particular, which carry out purifying activities. The role of stimulating the immune system makes Aloe Vera a valid detoxifier. |
