IN BOTANY Tea Tree Oil is the essential oil obtained from the distillation of Melaleuca Alternifolia leaves, an officinal plant growing on the east coast of Australia. The virtues of this tree are well-known by the aborigines, who have used its leaves to treat wounds and skin infections for centuries.
IN MEDICINE , official sources ascribe very good antifungal, antiseptic and antibacterial properties to essential Tea Tree Oil. The first studies date back to the 20's and demonstrate that Tea Tree Oil can contrast infections very efficiently (antiseptic property). During the 1930's the use of Tea Tree Oil was scientifically acknowledged and recommended to treat pyorrhea, gengivitis, rhinopharyngeal and gynaecological infections, mycetes and paronychia infections. At the end of the second world war the use of Tea Tree Oil diminished because antibiotics and other synthesis drugs were administered instead. In the early 1960's, when traditional medicine was rediscovered and natural products preferred, Tea Tree Oil "took on a new lease of life" and from the early 70's up to today many scientific studies, in the US, Australia and France in particular, have definitely demonstrated its great properties.
